NORMA JEAN - "Meridional" - Press Release April 2010
Fans of Norma Jean won’t have to wait much longer to hear the band’s fifth album Meridional, which will be released July 13th on Razor & Tie. Meridional revisits the abrasive and chaotic roots of classic Norma Jean, while offering fans a dark experimental side – the band stretching out on moody, slow-burn jams. It’s an album that finds the band comfortable in its legacy, but progressive and bold in its creativity.
Meridional was recorded in February 2010 at Glow in the Dark Studios in Atlanta with producer Jeremy Griffith. The band recorded eleven official tracks for the record, as well as a few extra bonus tracks and B-sides. Vocalist Cory Brandan described Meridional, "It’s a heavy record, multifaceted with epic sounding, experimental songs, some fast, chaotic songs, and some melodic, commanding interludes. Any track we didn’t think had reached its utmost sonic prowess, was given a second look, revised to be as powerful as possible."
The album’s release coincides with the start of the Mayhem Festival where Norma Jean will be playing on the Mayhem Festival Stage with Atreyu, In This Moment, and 3 Inches Of Blood. Mayhem Festival headliners include KoRn, Rob Zombie, Lamb Of God, and Five Finger Death Punch. Norma Jean will also be embarking on a two week tour with Every Time I Die starting May 11th. The band will perform new material on the limited club tour to give fans a taste of the upcoming album release. Cory Brandan commented, "If we had to choose any band to be stuck with on tour, it would be Every Time I Die. They’re one of our favorite bands, full of musicians that we respect. We only wish it was longer or could be liquefied so I could mainline it."
The five-piece metal band from Atlanta is Cory Brandan (vocalist/guitar), Scottie Henry (guitar), Jake Schultz (bass), Chris Day (guitar) and Chris Raines (drums). They have previously released four records prior to Meridional, selling over 365,000 albums. The Grammy-nominated band is known for their artistically chaotic sound which has influenced and resonated with the metal community.

NORMA JEAN - Biography 2009
Acclaimed post-hardcore heavy rockers Norma Jean recently signed with Razor & Tie and plan to head into the studio in January 2010 for a summer new album release. The Atlanta-based Norma Jean have released four albums to date selling over 360,000 combined. The band’s last album, The Anti Mother, debuted at #29 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart and received rave reviews with Alternative Press calling it "ambitious and addictive." The album is the most furious, and yet melodic, music of their career and featured Page Hamilton of Helmet as well as a collaboration with Deftones’ frontman Chino Moreno. The Grammy-nominated band has an enormous online following with over 15 million MySpace plays and 267,000 MySpace friends, as well as over 15,000 Facebook friends. Norma Jean has spent the last few years on the road - headlining the mainstage on the 2008 Warped Tour, secondstage on the 2006 Ozzfest, and has toured with countless bands worldwide.
Norma Jean consistently delivers heavy and potent songs that look life squarely in the eye. "The Jean absolutely live life’s purpose, giving away the pure essence of real love and it’s not pretty at all,” says producer Ross Robinson with whom the band re-teamed for their last album after he first manned the boards on the quintet’s strongly received Redeemer (2006). “Being fearless, Norma Jean steps musically beyond the line of greatness. The music is the soundtrack of surviving any situation and becoming who you were born to be.”
The band’s last album marked an artistic and creative high point with sonically adventurous songs. The sound of Cory Brandan (lead vocals, guitars) stepping away from his trademark growl and embracing melody raised more than a few eyebrows. The band – also consisting of Scottie Henry (guitars), Jake Schultz (bass), Chris Day (guitars) and Chris Raines (drums) – says it plans to continue evolving creatively. “We don’t like to set any norms for Norma Jean,” Scottie says. “People call us metalcore or post-hardcore, but we just write what comes. Being open to trying new things and having Cory actually singing has sent this record in a different direction. We aren’t trapped in any kind of sound or scene. It’s healthy for us to expand and grow.” Or as Cory explains, “I love melodic, catchy songs, plain and simple. The Smashing Pumpkins are one of my favorite bands ever. And all they did was write love songs, even if they were heavy. We want to write heavy records, but still melodic and we’re stoked on that.”
Norma Jean’s willingness to branch out and break down musical walls, as well as the fact that the entire band is involved in the lyrical process, sets them apart. “We write lyrics together,” Cory says proudly. “I know it’s unusual, but we all want to know what every song is about. I can’t tell you how many bands there are where you ask the guitarist what the lyrics mean, and they’re like, ‘I don’t know... Some girl?’”
Whether it’s the aggressive, hardcore, expansive or experimental Norma Jean crafts and delivers its music with conviction. Cory explains, “It’s about finding something that makes the song come alive. We’re more interested in the song having feeling as opposed to having a perfect studio product.” And if it’s up to Brandan, his hope is that listeners will get something from the band’s music that’s unique and personal to them. “I want them to make our music their own,” the singer says. “That’s how I’ve always gone about it. That dates back to when I was a kid in my bedroom listening to Helmet or Fugazi or Deftones. I want to lend that kind of experience to people who hear our band.”

01. Leaderless and Self Enlisted
Enslavement wasn’t my first choice. My will is greater than that, believe me. I’d scratch away to the center.
I’d bite it down to the blood. I want to rip out the foundation, I want the axis to rupture.
I never wanted to tell you since we know you’ve heard it before. Yeah... I never wanted to show you since we know you’ve seen it before I break your heart, I know... I know you’ve felt it before.
Yeah... Too many things try to pull me down. Life seems to be like a dropping cloud. Believe me, I’d scratch away to the center. I’d bite it down to the blood. I want to rip out the foundation, I want the axis to rupture. I’d scratch away to the center. I’d bite it down to the blood.
I never wanted to tell you since we know you’ve heard it before. Yeah... I never wanted to show you since we know you’ve seen it before I break your heart, I know... I know you’ve felt it before... so many times before... before.
I’d scratch away to the center. I’d bite it down to the blood... the blood.
I’d scratch away to the center. I’d bite it down to the blood.
I’d scratch away to the center. I’d bite it down to the blood. I’d bite it down to the blood.
03. The Deathbed Atheist
Watch it all change and watch it go away. Watch it all never be the same again. Watch it all be nothing like we thought before. Watch it all. Watch it. Watch it all be lies, damned lies, statistics. Lie to me. Lie to me. Lie to me.
Take it all in and take it all from me. Take it all and bury it deep inside of you.
Take it all and run away. Take it all forever. Take it all. Take it all. Take it all. Take it all. Take it all.
Bury your hands in the sand. You’ll never use them on me again.
Bury your hands in the sand. You’ll never use them on me again.
Lie... Take it all. Take it. Take it all. Take it. Lie... Take it all. Take it. Take it all. Take it.
Bury your hands in the sand. You’ll never use them on me again.
Bury your hands in the sand. You’ll never use them on me again.
I’m exhausted from shaking hands with your meat hook fingers.
